Enrollment procedures and what to expect!

  1. Go to www.ice.gov/sevis there is lots of important information available.
  2. Send me the required personal information.
  3. Send me the required financial documents i.e. bank statements showing that you are capable of paying for the course and supporting your self for the duration of your course.
  4. Before I issue the signed I-20m form I will need a deposit of $350 usd. I will use that money to pay for the shipping of the documents and to secure your entry into my school. This is a non refundable fee and is not part of the tuition fees.
  5. To avoid multiple fedex charges for the I-20m form be very clear about your timetable, addresses, and personal data. I can accept students at any time because of the one on one training but the visa laws require you to actually arrive at my school no later then the start date agreed to before the signing and sending of the I-20m form. You may arrive up to 30 days early and we would start shortly after your arrival.
  6. There is a I-901 fee that needs to be paid prior to your visit with the US Consulate. The I-901 fee is $100 + $30 for expedited services. The receipt for that fee must be taken with you to your visa application meeting. This fee is paid by you to the US government and is non-refundable and is not part of the tuition fees.
  7. To save delays and disappointment on your arrival you need to visit www.flightschoolcandidates.gov This is the TSA web site. There is a $130 fee that needs to be paid and personal information needs to be given. If there is a way for you to submit your fingerprints before you arrive at my school it will shorten or eliminate any delays to your flight training. If you do not submit your fingerprints prior to your arrival at my school you can expect at least a two week delay in flight training. The only exception to this rule would be an intro flight of limited duration! I will not break this rule. The TSA will require you to apply 3 times for a total of $390. This fee is paid by you to the US government and is non refundable and is not part of the tuition fees.
  8. If you can find an FAA approved doctor in your area it would be best to take your physical before you get here. It will save you time and money if a certification problem is detected. If you can not find an FAA approved Doctor abroad then you must pay the $120 (approxamate) exam fee prior to your exam. This fee is paid by you and is non refundable regardless of the outcome of the physical. This fee is not part of the tuition.
During your stay you can expect!
  1. To be treated fairly and to fly as often as possible. I try not to overbook my planes but occasionally problems arise if you are patient you will almost always get to fly sometime during a given day.
  2. I do not like problems and I try hard not to have any. This does not mean that I am to be feared just please approach me with your  problems before they get to be big problems.
  3. There are phones in each living area and at the airport. These phones are for local calls and toll free numbers unless you have a calling card. A calling card is an important item to have. They can be purchased locally or online. You will be supplied a dialup internet connection
  4. There is a computer at the airport with internet dial up connection please share access with fellow students. Laptops are nice to have and may be used at your dorm room
During your stay I expect!
  1. To be treated fairly. I have no control over the weather so be ready to fly during good weather and study during the bad weather or anytime after your flight
  2. I expect you to keep the dorms clean. If you have a room mate you must work out the cleaning chores. Consider this an exercise in Cockpit Resource Management. If the rooms are not kept reasonably clean I will hire someone to clean them and while this will be a modest fee it will be paid before any further flight training. Houses that are lived in accumulate normal insignificant damages, damages due to abuse will not be tolerated! Occasional inspections will be announced.
  3. I also expect you to be helpful to your fellow students! Race, creed, religion, gender, or skills will not be an issue at my school. You are all fellow aviators and all human beings.
Life in Backus Minnesota!

Backus Minnesota is a small and peaceful village of 300 residents. You can walk or ride your Bicycles with out the threat of crime or traffic. The airport is less then a mile from the dorms.
Backus is in the center of the lakes region and 100's of lakes surrounded by forests will be the scene you fly over everyday. These lakes and forests are for the most part public. The area is free of poisonous snakes, reptiles, and dangerous insects. The lakes are 100% safe. We do have Black bears but the only cases, on record, of human attacks have been by mother bears protecting their cubs. I have lived in this area for over 35 years and have only seen 2-3 bears in the wild and they were leaving my area quickly.
Backus does have small grocery stores but most students, without cars, will fly to a larger town and shop at "Walmart" and fly home.
Camping, fishing, and exploring the 100 mile bike trail, which travels past the dorm, are available. I can not guarantee this but you will possibly make friends with some of my local students/pilots who will add to the adventure of living in Backus.
A big advantage in flying comes from the fact that we have no control tower and an hour long flight lesson will probably include nearly 50 minuets of flight time. If you were to go to the large flight schools in Florida, California, Texas, an hour long flight lesson will only include 20-25 minutes of actual flight! The rest of that hour, you are paying for, will be waiting for clearances and taxiing on the ground. We fly to our control tower and you will be allowed to do that anytime you like after your Private license has been issued.
We do fly all winter long but students from warm climates sometimes find it hard to deal with. But with warm jackets and shoes winter is extremely enjoyable. Our lakes freeze solid and we put small houses out and fish through the ice. We even land the plane on the ice, sorry "dual" only. You can not do that in other schools.
I think the biggest advantage in training in Backus Minnesota at Air D Inc. is the experience level of your flight instructors. I have nearly 9000 flight hours and my friend and employee has nearly 7000 flight hours. We can all have accidents but we both feel very comfortable teaching and we are both career flight instructors not just young people with 300 hrs. teaching so we can get enough hours to fly for the airlines.

Thanks I hope to meet as many of you as possible.

Apace Aviation Consultants are my sole agents, in India, and they need to be contacted.
They will help advise and organize your application to my school.
They are very knowledgeable in the DGCA rules and what to do to assure a smooth conversion of your FAA license to Indian license.
